Monday, August 7, Bangpra – Medal

The first medal round of the month was played at the ever popular Bangpra course. The course offered up a few new challenges today; bunkers were mostly of hard packed sand and the greens were surprisingly slower than we expect from this course.
A good role up of a dozen players took part and saw a return to form from Geoff Parker who took the honours with a net seventy-one off a handicap of fifteen. One point back was Jimmy Carr and Les Cobban brought up the rear with a net seventy-four.
Wednesday, August 9, Eastern Star – Stableford

Golf sometimes throws up some unusual occurrences and today was such a day. Steve Simmonds, playing at the Bunker for only the second time, had one of the more unusual pars seen in a while. On the par-5 eighth hole, he put his drive into the water, took a drop at the point of entry for three and put this shot into the water on the other side of the fairway. Again he took a drop for five at the point of entry and put this shot straight onto the green and into the cup. Had to be seen to be believed.
Honours for the day went to a “Ned Kely” from Oz, Geoff Bracegirdle, with a respectable thirty-five off a sixteen handicap. Second went to Jimmy Carr on thirty-two with Mike Brett bringing up the rear with thirty-one.
Friday, August, 11, Greenwood – Stableford
1st Geoff Parker 37pts

3rd Les Hall 35pts

We had another good low season rollup of 12 players for today’s round at a deserted Greenwood. We were allocated the B and C courses and it seems they were to most people’s liking as the scoring was of a high standard.
Geoff Parker, clearly enjoying his highest handicap for some time, was again to the fore and took first place with solid thirty-seven points. Les Cobban took second place with thirty-six and Les Hall, another enjoying a rather generous handicap of twenty-five, took third place with thirty-five. Only two players managed a near pin, Geoff Parker and laughing Les Burns.
Highlight of the day went to Raleigh Gosney who had a birdie on a par-4 with an approach shot from about one hundred and fifty yards that went straight into the cup. One might reasonably ask why he was so far from the hole with his first two shots.
