Monday, Sept. 11, Lake View G.C. – Stableford
1st John O’Donoghue (20) 43pts
2nd Klaus Fast (3) 38pts
3rd Kerry Langland (12) 37pts
Last week 16 golfers from the TRGG travelled to Hua Hin on the King of the Mountain golf tour. The party started off on Monday at Lake View Golf Club which provided a wonderful setting with many scenic holes married to fast true greens.
Kerry Langland made a fast start and his 37 points was good enough to take the day’s third place while Klaus Fast, the week’s lowest handicapper, shot a wonderful 38 points to take second.
The round of the day was scored by John O’Donoghue whose 43 points made a mockery of the fact that he had been made the rank outsider for the week.
Tuesday, Sept. 12, Banyan G.C. – Stableford
1st Trevor Oliver (13) 38pts
2nd Terry Powell (12) 36pts
3rd John Goudge (8) 35pts
On Tuesday the group travelled to Banyan Golf Course, claimed to be one of the top 5 courses in Thailand and its billing did not disappoint. The course possesses magnificent settings and the topography blends in with each hole.
John Goudge scored 35 points to take third place but only two players shot their handicaps or better. One of them was Terry Power whose 36 points was good enough for the second but the star of the day was Trevor Oliver with a wonderful round of 38 points.
Thursday, Sept. 14, Springfield G.C. – Stableford
1st John Goudge (8) 41pts
2nd Trevor Oliver (13) 39pts
3rd Klaus Fast (2) 35pts
4th Simon Tapster (15) 35pts
With the players rested up after no golf the previous day, the group made its way to the Springfield Golf Course. After playing Banyan on Tuesday the course had a lot to live up to and it did not disappoint.
In a share of third place came Simon Tapster with 35 points and on the same score was Klaus Fast who shot a fine 3 over par round. Also with 35 was John O’Donoghue who was protecting his overnight lead while in second place came Trevor Oliver with 39 points.
The day’s winner was John Goudge who posted a tremendous score of 39 points garnered from his 3 over raw score.
Friday, Sept. 15, Sea Pines G.C. – Stableford
1st Paul Hansbury (11) 36pts
2nd Klaus Fast (2) 35pts
3rd Trevor Oliver (13) 33pts
4th John Goudge (8) 32pts
On Friday the group visited the army run Sea Pines Golf Course giving magnificent views over the South China Sea. The morning was hot and sultry and most players seemed to score better on the front 9 than they did on the way home.
John Goudge started the day in second position overall and he worked hard to remain there. His 32 points was good enough for fourth place and he kept the tournament leader in his sights.
The man at the top of the pile, Trevor Oliver, produced his worst score of the week, 33 points to take third place and Klaus Fast once again shot the lowest raw score of the day, his 3 under par being good enough to take second. The day belonged to Paul Hansbury as he was the only player to shoot his handicap.
Saturday, Sept. 16, Black Mountain G.C. – Stableford
1st Kerry Langland (12) 41pts
2nd John Hegg (8) 40pts
3rd Jim Cooper (16) 38pts
The final day saw the group heading to Black Mountain with everything to play for. Jimmy Cooper produced his best form of the week to score 38 points and take third place while John Hegg also saved his best until last and his 40 points took second position. However, the round of the day came from Kerry Langland who shot 41. This fine score was also good enough to get him in the top 3 for the week where he took a share of third place.
Kerry shared his prize with John O’ Donoghue who had a very good week averaging 35 points per round. John Goudge threatened to take the title during the final round, but he couldn’t maintain the momentum and he finished second behind the eventual winner Trevor Oliver. It was a comfortable 4 point win for Trevor in a week where he averaged 36 points over five tough rounds.
