Monday, Sept. 25, Phoenix Gold – Stableford

Phoenix on a very hot day today with 4 groups playing on the Mountain and Lakes loops.  Only 4 out of 16 players scored over 30 points but no one, including the scribe, could blame the conditions.

There was a count back for silver and bronze between Sasicha and Gerard with the lady being relegated to third and Gerard taking second, both on 33 points.  Out in front was Lloyd Shuttleworth, playing off his 5 handicap and shooting 77 gross for 36 points.

There were no ‘2’s recorded.

Wednesday, Sept. 27, Green Valley – Monthly Medal

The scores overall were not particularly good today but, as always, many of the ladies played to or better than their handicap.  Miss Nu played well to occupy fourth place in the Ladies flight with a net 71, losing out on count-back to Miss Poopay who only dropped 3 shots on the back nine.  Miss Orowan was the bridesmaid today with a net 69 but Miss Eng, who is firing on all cylinders recently, received the trophy with a net 67.  She started badly with 15 shots on the first two holes but recovering nicely to finish with 5 consecutive pars.

One of the rules of the monthly medal, and an invitation to play in the grand final, is that the winner of the event must be present to receive the award.  Unfortunately for John Anderson, who had the best score of the day with a net 71, and Vincent Smyth who was relegated to second place on the same score, they did not return to the bar so the shirt and trophy were presented to Jeff North who came home in third place with a net 74, one better than Gerard Lambert.

Four ‘2’s today came from Miss Eng, Miss Som, George Barrie and Vincent Smyth.

Friday, Sept. 29, Phoenix Gold – Scramble

The monthly scramble at Phoenix saw the worst winning score ever since we started having these competitions.  We have never had a score in the 60s win but that happened today, and you couldn’t blame the course as it was in pristine condition.

It was good to see one of the first ever teams to compete in the Billabong back in the winners’ circle as the Courtyard Cavaliers came in third today with a net score of 62.4, taking that place on a count back.  Second went Rick Culley, Ramsay Smith, Brian Orr and Vincent Smyth with a net score of 61.6, narrowly being beaten by the defending champions Rick Hiate, Eddy Horrocks, Neil Decker and John with 61.5.
