Nong Plalai residents planted rice as part of a community project to both preserve traditional customs and entice tourists to visit.
Banglamung District Chief Naris Niramaiwong opened the Nov. 15 “Rice Planting on the Land of Our Ancestors” project sponsored by the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration and the Pattaya Cultural Council.
DASTA wants to highlight Nong Plalai as a traditional site of rice growing on its cultural tourism route. The rice-farming initiative is supported by the Tourism Promotion Club of Nong Plalai and the sub-district government.
Nong Plalai residents have followed HM the late King’s “sufficiency economy” philosophy to cultivate soil, water and forestland to grow crops to make them independent.
The locals are now branding their tradition as a tourism draw, hoping to bring visitors to the area to see how they produce rice and also generate extra income for the region.
