The largest group of the week travelled the furthest and scored the worst at a course which is always difficult when the greens are at their fiercest, which they were on this occasion.

Allan Hanlon.

Darryl Burkett took the first division after winning a count back over Allan Hanlon with a better 17 to 14 and Kevin Blake did well to amass 33 points in third place ahead of Dave Edwards in fourth and Garry Barling, recovering from surgery still, in fifth.

The second division was led in by Brendan Dunne whose top score of the day will surely mean a well-deserved reduction in handicap.

Stuart Thompson, making a return to the group after a very long gap, claimed second after he won a count back over Markku Tynell with a better 16 to 13.  Phil Stevenson then won another count back over Shuichi Kodaka, scoring 15 against 12 to take fourth place.

There were no 2s in the second division but Dave Edwards had the sole one in the first division to sweep the pool.

 Wednesday, Dec. 6, Khao Kheow B & C (yellow tees) – Stableford

CSS 73

1st Allan Hanlon (14) 37pts

2nd Mark Cooper (11) 34pts

3rd Paul Stewart (16) 31pts

4th Christer Olsson (17) 30pts

5th Markku Tynell (24) 28pts

6th Trevor Schirmer (16) 28pts

Another very hard day was experienced by the hopefuls when they took on the B & C courses at Khao Kheow.

Brendan Dunne.

Allan Hanlon made up for his disappointment in the previous event, taking the top spot with a very good two under the CSS for the day that was good enough to see him three clear of his nearest challenger.  That was Mark Cooper who is still struggling to get back to his best form while carrying some nagging injuries, but he did enough to take second place three ahead of third placed newcomer Paul Stewart.

Christer Olsson ran him close in fourth place followed by Markku Tynell after he won a count back over Trevor Schirmer with a better 13 to 8.  Trevor looked as if he would finally be on the top step again after the opening nine holes over which he had an excellent 20 points, but the strain must have been just a little too much.

In keeping with how hard the course was playing there were no 2s in either of the divisions.

Friday, Dec. 1, Pattaya C.C. (white tees) – Stableford

CSS 72

1st Phil Stevenson (24) 36pts

2nd Markku Tynell (24) 36pts

3rd Christer Olsson (17) 35pts

4th Darryl Burkett (12) 35pts

5th Howard Jeglum (15) 35pts

6th Brendan Dunne (28) 35pts

The last event of the week proved to be the one that showed the best results with the top six all well within the buffer zone for the day as the course was found to be in very good shape with the greens deserving of special mention.

Phil Stevenson was humming the “Red Flag” as he strode through the last three holes in one under handicap, and seven points, which helped him win a count back for the day’s top honours over Markku Tynell with a better 22 to 20.

Phil’s celebrations carried through to well after the prize giving and even later at various watering (sic) holes in the city.

Christer Olsson signed off in his last event of his current visit with another placement in third place when he won another count back with Darryl Burkett scoring a better 15 to 12 on the bac six after they had tied the nine on 19 each.

Also in the same count back were Howard Jeglum who placed fifth scoring 16 on the back nine and Brendan Dunne in sixth with 14, after he had crashed badly through the last three holes, not scoring a single point.

Once again there were no 2s on the day, but several stories of near misses and if only, emerged after the presentations when the sizes of the un-won pools were discovered.
