Bangkok – The Thai Red Cross Society has conducted a speaker session to educate the public about stem cell technology and its benefits in the healthcare industry.

The event which took place at the Thai Red Cross National Blood Center was designed to raise awareness of stem cell transplantation which can help treat a number of illnesses such as leukemia, thalassemia, aplastic anemia (a rare bone marrow disease), lymphoma (a cancer of the lymph nodes and lymphatic system), and several types of cancer.

The Thai Red Cross Society has encouraged adults aged 18-50 to donate stem cells at its headquarters in Bangkok and at five hospitals: King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Ramathibodi Hospital, Siriraj Hospital, Phramongkutklao Hospital, and Songklanagarind Hospital.

Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. In human tissue, they will often serve as an internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person is still alive.
