The Federation of Thai Industries celebrated its 50th anniversary by giving away 220 bicycles to students in Chonburi’s rural districts.

Deputy Gov. Chanchai Iamcharoen chaired the Dec. 18 presentation at the provincial hall with FTI corporate social responsibility head Pairat Urchuyod.

He said the association encourages its corporate members to support society and be active in their communities and, as part of FTI’s 50th anniversary celebration, it is holding events across the country to help the poor and those in rural areas.

Its biggest project is the donation of 7,000 bicycles nationwide, with all the equipment funded through donations by FTI members and benefactors.

Bicycles can help kids in remote areas stay in school by making their commute easier, Pairat said.

The bikes are loaners, meaning when the student recipient graduates he or she is expected to pass it on to a younger student. Teachers and students must be responsible for taking care of the bicycles to ensure they remain in good condition.

FTI’s Chonburi branch donated 220 bikes to schools in the province, with members and donors purchasing the bikes for the program.
