BANGKOK, 3 January 2013  Heavy rains continue to batter the South as Phatthalung provincial authorities warn residents to brace for possible flash floods and forest runoffs.

A new bout of rain has exacerbated the situation in the already-flooded areas of Phatthalung province, especially in Khuan Khanun district where over 300 households are being affected. Residents in some districts need to use boats to commute in and out of their villages.

Phatthalung Governor Winyu Thongsakul has alerted residents living near hillsides and waterways to be prepared for more flash floods and mudslides. He has also instructed relevant agencies to assist affected locals where necessary.

Disaster-prone areas in the province include Mueang, Khuan Khanun, Khao Chaison, Srinagarindra, Kong Ra and Si Banphot districts.
