1.2 million first-car buyers file for tax rebates

BANGKOK, 3 January 2013  According to the Excise Department, a total of 1.2 million first-time car owners have filed for tax rebates under the government’s first car scheme. 

Excise Department Director-General Somchai Pulsawas revealed that from September 16, 2011, to December 31, 2012, the number of tax rebate applications submitted by first-time car buyers reached more than 1.2 million, exceeding the projected target by 500,000, with the total value of over 90 billion baht.

Out of the number, over 730,000 applications were filed for sedans, 250,000 for pick-up trucks and another 250,000 for double cabs.

Mr Somchai made known that so far nearly 50,000 eligible car owners have received their refunds, worth over 3 billion baht in total. He added that the government is due to allocate more than 30 billion baht during the next fiscal year to the first-car tax rebate program.
