A Russian man was injured after harpooning himself while spear-fishing.
Scuba diving off Koh Larn, Caeohob Sazonov, 62, was rushed by speedboat to the island’s clinic and then back to the mainland and Pattaya Hospital after trying his hand at killing a small fish with a big spear. Instead, he speared his hand and pierced his leg.
Sazonov and his son were diving off Tawaen Beach with the plan to spear dinner, even though fish that close to Koh Larn are all of the guppy variety.
Spear-fishing is not illegal in Thailand, but strongly frowned upon by reputable scuba-diving operators, due to the obvious danger to the fisherman and the country’s depleted fish stocks.
