Eighteen government agencies and businesses have agreed to modernize Pattaya-area tourist attractions to be accessible to the disabled and elderly.

Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat and Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith were on hand for the Feb. 28 signing in Sattahip, along with top Pattaya and Chonburi officials and Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Director-General Nalikatibhag Sangsnit.

DASTA teamed up with the Friendly Design for All Foundation to create a prototype tourist attraction in Najomtien Sub-district. FDAF executives said the design showed that tourist attractions can be modern while offering safety and convenience for all.

Weerasak said the goal is to make all Thai tourist attractions accessible for all ages and physical abilities, including the disabled, the elderly and families with small children.

Arkhom said the idea of accessibility should extend to the entire mass-transit network and have that network tie into major attractions.

Nalikatibhag said the prototype is a product of the “Tourism for All” campaign begun in August and wants area attraction operators to use it as a model on which to modernize their facilities.
