Monday, March 12, King’s Naga – Stableford

1st Gez Williams ((15) 35pts

2nd Gordon Melia ((20) 32pts

3rd Michael Brett (16) 31pts

4th Takeshi Hakozaki (13) 31pts

5th Dave Ashman (18) 31pts

A good field of twenty golfers rolled up for the first game of the week at King’s Naga.  Two possible reasons for the large turnout, the cost of the round was attractive to many, also with Friday’s play rained off people were keen to get back on the course again.

For the time of year, this normally dry course was in a remarkably good condition with well-grassed fairways, the only issue was a few greens were particularly slow and in need of mowing.  The course clearly has benefited from good recent rain.  Speaking of rain which threatened all day, it finally hit us on the closing holes necessitating a twenty-minute shelter.

Today there were no issues with lack of caddies, those that were available were amongst the most competent we have seen anywhere of late, nice to see the course finally getting its act together.

Scoring was on the low side today with only Gez Williams posting a decent thirty-five points to claim first place.  The wily Gordon Melia took second place with thirty-two, while third, fourth and fifth places were all thirty-one points separated on count-back, the places filled by Michael Brett, Takeshi Hakozaki, and Dave Ashman.  Near pins went to Peter Kelly, Keith Smithson, Gary Bright, and Michael Brett.

Wednesday, March 14, Bangpra – Stableford

1st Dave Maw (17) 38pts

2nd Les Cobban (9) 35pts

3rd Keith Smithson (4) 34pts

4th Garry Bright (10) 33pts

A hot steamy day lay in store for the fifteen golfers in the midweek game at Bangpra, however, a strong breeze moderated the heat somewhat and made play a little more comfortable if not more difficult for anyone with a tendency to slice.  Pace of play was excellent with the round completed in under three hours and thirty minutes as it should be all the time.

Today Dave Maw took first place with a fine thirty-eight points.  The ever-consistent Les Cobban took second place with thirty-five points, edging Keith Smithson into third on thirty-four, whilst Garry Bright brought up the rear with thirty-three points.  It was a case of what might have been for Garry who missed several makeable putts, particularly on the par-five fifth where he had an eagle putt but ended up with a bogey, one of several instances where the flat stick failed him.

Near pins went to Dave Maw (2), Robbie Watts, Les Cobban.

Friday, March 16, Parichat – Stableford

1st Dave Maw (17) 37pts

2nd Colin Greig (7) 36pts

3rd Richard Mohns (15) 34pts

It could have been the cost at 1,500 baht all in or the course which kept numbers down today to fourteen.  For sure the course it not everybody favorite, it can be tricky with hidden traps and the wind seems to always blow there, however, the course could not be faulted in its preparation for play.  Greens were amongst the best of any course, fairways were well grassed and the tee boxes were like carpet.

The course does suite the rainbow format which we played today using the black, white and red tees. The choice of tee on each hole was crucial to success and it seems that the players familiar with the course made better choices than the inexperienced.

Dave Maw took first place with thirty-seven points, clearly on his game today.  Colin Greig took second on thirty-six thanks to some excellent putting, and Richard Mohns on thirty-four points filled third place. Near pins to Dave Maw, Jimmy Carr and two to Colin Greig
