Thai-period dress, especially from the Ayutthaya Era, was more popular than floral shirts during Songkran in Pattaya this year thanks to the hit television show “Buppaysanniwad”.

Sontaya Sornbanyen, owner of Pu Boutique, which sells holiday clothing, said it’s usually easy to predict what will be popular. During Loy Krathong, for example, it’s traditional Thai dress. During Songkran it’s flowered shirts. But not this year.

“Buppaysanniwad”, an Ayutthaya-period drama that has captured the nation’s attention, had many people celebrating the Thai New Year more traditionally this year. As such, people bought more retro clothing than wild shirts.

Demand nationwide has been so strong leading costume manufacturer Pahurat said it cannot keep up with demand.

While sales were expected to slow after Songkran, the continuing TV show and the government’s practice of dressing traditionally on Tuesdays will keep the industry humming.
