Monday, April 23, Phoenix Gold – Stableford
We had just a small field of 12 golfers on a very hot day at Phoenix Gold. We played Lakes and Ocean and both nines are in great shape, the greens were a bit tricky on the Lakes but you get used to that eventually.
The scoring was not too bad apart from one or two golfers who hit the wall on the last few holes. Bob Pearce took third spot with a fine 37 points while there was a count back for the top two places on 38 points, with Peter Jeucken just edging George Barrie for the honours.
There were two ‘2’s, coming from Paul Greenaway and George Barrie, George slam dunking his approach shot on the 3rd hole on the Lakes side for the second eagle in his golfing career.
Wednesday, April 25, Green Valley – Medal
A medal comp today sponsored by Brian Chapman, of Haven Consultants. It was a hot humid day and much of the round was accompanied by thunder but we were lucky to escape the rain. The greens had been heavily tined and sanded which made putting interesting but these things must be done if we want good greens later on.
The scores for both the ladies and their male counterparts were remarkable when considering the condition of the greens. Miss Tan could have had a better result had she not had a quadruple bogie on the 10th for a 68, losing out to Miss Sasicha on the same score to occupy third place. Miss On moved up a gear on the turn, improving the back nine by 5 shots to record a 67 but 2 shots behind the eventual winner Miss Poopay, who had two double bogies in her 65.
The men’s scores were equal to those of the ladies with three finishing on 68. Occasional golfer, Brian Chapman, did not perform too well on the par 5s to miss out to Thiery Petrement who had a triple bogey on the 10th to fall behind Peter Thomas on the back nine for second place. The winner, Williams Macey, admitted to receiving some help from the holes in the greens to claim the medal with a 67.
It was a surprise to see only three ‘2’s, these going to Am North, Lynn and Auke Engelkes.
Friday, April 27, Phoenix Gold – Scramble
The monthly scramble held at the Phoenix was played on the Lakes and Ocean loops on a hot day. The course was in great condition but he had a depleted field today with only 7 teams competing.
As is usual in this format, putting is the answer to having a good score and also making no bogies. Well that was what transpired today with the bridesmaids from last month, namely the Valley Hackers, led by Ed Horricks scoring a net 58.2, almost exactly the same score as last month. They were beaten by 0.9 of a shot by the defending champions Sasicha, Paul Greenaway, Greig Ritchie and Bob Philp.
