BANGKOK, Jan 16 – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra promised better welfare and risk allowances for teachers nationwide to mark National Teachers’ Day today.

The premier made her remark as she presided over the Teachers’ Day event. On this occasion she paid respects to her own kindergarten, primary and secondary school teachers.

Ms Yingluck said the teacher is the role model who delivers knowledge to children and instills them with social responsibility.

“Thank you to every teacher who has devoted their lives, particularly teachers in the deep South who died while performing their duty,” said the prime minister. “I feel truly grateful and insist that the government will provide better welfare for teachers [in future].”

Ms Yingluck however urged teachers to improve their knowledge as the world is changing. She advised them to adjust their teaching methods with the help of technology so that Thai education will be developed paving the way to the country’s integration into the ASEAN Community.

The premier said that the government is working on providing a risk allowance for teachers in the insurgency-torn southern region.

Meanwhile, in the restive southern border province of Narathiwat, teachers from Baan Kaena School in the provincial seat today pledged to continue their duty until the end of their life.

The teachers vowed that they will not leave the restive areas and that they will work to carry on the intentions of the 157 teachers and education officials killed in the insurgency.

After the oath ceremony, the teachers observed one minute of silence in remembrance of the deaths of 157 teachers including Juling Ponggunmul, assistant teacher of Kujingreupa School in  Rangae district, who died in 2007 after she was severely attacked and beaten by insurgents in 2006 at the school where she taught.
