NBTC approves THB960mil budget to offer free WiFi across Thailand

BANGKOK, 17 January 2013  The telecom regulator has approved a budget worth nearly a billion baht to enable Thais to enjoy free WiFi service as soon as possible. 

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) Secretary-General Thakorn Tanthasit revealed on Wednesday that the latest NBTC meeting resolved to approve a budget of 950 million baht to set up the Telecommunication Research and Development Fund.

The meeting also decided to assign the Information and Communication Technology Ministry (ICT) to utilize the fund in the implementation of the Free WiFi project across the country.

Mr. Thakorn said that the Cabinet has approved the project with an aim to promote the use of internet and an easier access to information among all Thais.

He added that the Free WiFi service will be made available at some 30,000 locations throughout Thailand, such as government universities, city halls, district offices, state hospitals and major tourist destinations.
