Patriotic rally, election activities to invigorate Bangkok today

BANGKOK, Jan 21 – Metropolitan police are fully deployed for a two-pronged activity in the heart of the capital today, one involving the city gubernatorial election and the other the Phra Viharn (Preah Vihear) temple dispute.

Pol Maj-Gen Prinya Chansuriya, Metropolitan Police deputy commander, met yesterday with to review security for the two events will take place at separate locations less than five kilometres apart.

He talked with leaders of the Thai Patriots Network who said they will gather at the Royal Plaza before moving to the Supreme Court and the headquarters of the three armed forces to submit petitions on the International Court of Justice ruling on the Phra Viharn temple dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.

Gen Prinya said police must assure that the rally will not spillover to cause inconvenience at City Hall where Bangkok election candidates are scheduled to show up on the first day of candidacy registration.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has set Jan 21-25 for Bangkok election candidate registration.

Gen Prinya said more than 100 police will be assigned at City Hall to direct traffic and facilitate candidates and their political advocates who are expected to come in thousands to give their moral support. (
