Having experimented with copy and paste solutions to the flooding problems in Pattaya for the past 40 years, the city fathers have now decided to open up to recommendations and advice from flood prevention experts.
Deputy Mayor Apichart Virapal chaired the June 1 meeting of members of the city council and heads of governmental departments to hear proposals for Project Phase I: Suitability studies, surveys, and designing flood prevention systems in Pattaya City.
Also, in attendance was Chukiet Subpaisan, Project Manager of the Water Development Co., Ltd., hired by Pattaya City to assist in the planning of this massive undertaking.
Chukiet said drains in Pattaya were too small and therefore water could not flow through them fast enough, thus causing floods. He also said that the original sewer blocks were too small.
He made some conjectural suggestions which included building a large drainage tunnel under Sukhumvit Road running to the sea and replacing the sewer blocks with larger ones.
He also noted that whatever solutions were decided on, they must not be detrimental to the community and cause damage to the environment, and must be integrated with waste water management.
The initial budget required would be 3.411 billion baht.
The Water Development Co., Ltd., will next meet with Department of Local Public Works and Town & Country Planning to discuss the plan before taking the project proposal to the next phase.
