The Nongprue Public Health Department joined sub-district schools to reduce garbage and conserve energy on World Environment Day.
Health chief Surapol Karumprasert said June 5 that waste management has become a major issue for the Pattaya area and Nongprue is working diligently to tackle the mountain of trash.
On World Environment Day the target was local schools where trash bins often are ignored, with kids dropping milk cartons and other rubbish on the ground.
In response, the sub-district launched a recycling project in which at least 3,000 milk cartons are now disposed of properly each day.
Executives from Fiberpat Co. spoke to kids about the importance of recycling, showing how milk cartons could be turned into art, paper, books and even roofing material.
Nongprue schools are now collecting their old milk boxes and sending them to firms that create the rolls of “green” roof coatings that keep buildings cooler.
The day’s activities concluded with school cleanups.
