Pattaya-area police reminded World Cup fans that gambling is illegal in Thailand and urged schools to step up supervision of football-crazed students.
Pol. Lt. Col. Daranpop Srathongyu from Banglamung Police Station and Police Commission member Pairoj Prawatlertudom kicked off their anti-gambling campaign at Photisampan Pittayakarn School June 11 with Principal Somsak Duangcharoen.
The Office of the Basic Education Commission has ordered schools to be vigilant against student betting during the global football tournament that runs through July 15.
The initiative also covers teachers and school staff so that they set good examples for youths by not engaging in or romanticizing gambling on football.
OBEC and police want schools to better supervise pupils to prevent football-related fights, promote football in a healthy way, strictly scrutinize student absences or tardiness during televised matches, show recorded matches appropriately, warn or terminate teachers or employees caught gambling, and seek out police assistance when necessary.
Authorities also called on parents to take extra care during the World Cup.
