Monday, June 11, Phoenix Gold – Stableford
A blustery day greeted us at Phoenix today, but no rain even threatened us. The course was virtually empty as the management was getting both Ocean and Mountain ready for the ELPGA tournament and was in tremendous condition, but tough for some old golfers.
We were only a small group today but even so out of three groups playing there were only 3 golfers that didn’t get over 30 points. The course was playing very short with some of the tees almost up with the ladies.
There was a count-back between the (Little French General) Gerard Lambert and Lloyd Shuttleworth, both on 34 points, with Gerard being relegated to third and Lloyd taking second spot. We were all outshined by the very lovely Sasicha who played to handicap with 36 points.
There were two ‘2’s, coming from Sasicha and Lloyd.
Wednesday, June 13, Green Valley – Stableford
You could not wish for anything better following the professional tournament here the previous week; the course was in great shape and the greens were fast and good to putt on.
The ladies had no problems with the course today and the consistent Miss May could only manage third place with her 37 points. Beating her on count-back was Miss Prae on the same score but moving up a gear to have 21 on the trip home. Miss Yen showed the course no respect with 42 points despite a double bogey on the 1st hole and took the honours today.
The men did not fare quite so well with Auk Engelkes returning 33 points for fourth place, one point behind Gary Ritchie in third. Tony Oaks thought he was in for a good day at the turn with 21 points but the wheels fell off from there and only 14 points in the inward half was the difference between him and the day’s winner, Peter Thomas on the same score but with 20 points on the back nine.
Only two ‘2’s today and both went to Gary Ritchie who missed a hole in one by less than inch on the 8th hole.
Friday, June 15, Burapha – Stableford
Burapha was in great condition and we had almost an empty course apart from a bus load of Korean golfers, but there were no holdups and a round under 4 hours kept everyone happy.
We had 5 groups playing today and only 4 players didn’t score better than 30 points. In saying that, nobody took the course to the cleaners either and a count-back for the minors places saw Jack Beaumont edge Bob St Aubin for second place, both on 34 points. Taking first place was a fella we haven’t seen in the winner’s circle a long time, but today Ramsay Smith won the day with 35 points and broke 100 shots for first time in 6 months at least.
There was only ‘2’, coming from Bob St Aubin.
