Parents of American children living abroad, it’s that time of year for the kids to get pen, paper and audio recorders together so they may draft and enter their “Patriots Pen” or “Voice of Democracy” scholarship entry essay.

VFW National administers this program through local VFW Post and Districts providing up to 150,000USD annually in scholarship awards money.

Any American citizen child grade 6 to 8 or 9 to 12 can participate by contacting the local Banchang Utapao Thailand “All American” VFW Post 12146 so that we may proudly nominate your child for this national scholarship program.

What is the Patriots Pen & Voice of Democracy Program (PP/VOD)?

Since 1947, the PP/VOD has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW) premier scholarship program. Each year, nearly 40,000 students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is, “Patriots Pen – Why I Honor the American Flag” (written essay only for younger junior grade school children); and “VOD – Why My Vote Matters” (requires written & audio, high school children).

Prizes and scholarships can be awarded at the Post, District, State and National level. Department (State) winners receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 2-6, 2019, to tour the city, be honored by the VFW and its Auxiliary and receive their portion of $154,000 in national awards, the top scholarship being $30,000.
