Speaking at the 3rd International Convention on Vocational Student’s Innovation Project at the Jomtien Garden Hotel and Resort Aug 6, Suthep Chitayawong, secretary of the Vocational Education Commission, said increasing math and science skills among Thai students is key to the government’s Thailand 4.0 initiative.

The conference brought together 350 students as young as third grade from Thailand, Singapore and South Korea to exchange experiences and learn from each other.

“Thailand’s economy has changed from production to new innovation research,” Suthep noted. “This government is trying to adjust the structure of Thailand’s economy to increase innovation to propel the economy by requiring science and mathematics, which are keys to making the country more competitive.”

Suthep said the learning and teaching process aims to respond to the Thailand 4.0 policy, focusing on science projects at the Chonburi college, which will focus on industrial engineering, and four other colleges: Suranaree Technical College in Nakhon Ratchasima, Lamphun College Of Agriculture and Technology, Singburi Vocational College and Phang Nga Province, which will focus on agriculture, food technology and tourism, respectively.
