Mae Hong Son province plans to open the Forest in the City as a new tourism attraction and to become a major producer of orchids.

The provincial forest resources management office’s executive director Manop Saioonjai said Mae Hong Son Provincial Governor Sirirat Choomupakan has discussed with the related agencies on the planning to push forward the production of the Dendrobium scabrilingue orchid, as initiated by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.

The officials have agreed to promote the plantation of Dendrobium scabrilingue orchids, as well as other varieties of orchid, in Mae Hong Son’s city forest. The project also includes the establishment of a learning center, and a flower dome at a parking lot behind Wat Doi Kong Mu temple.

The project will be funded by the provincial budget, and will be carried out by Chiang Mai Rajabhat University, Mae Hong Son college campus.

The governor observed the Forest in the City project at Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu temple, which will be promoted as another tourism attraction, which will be more scenic after the arrangement of orchid displays.

The Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board met on 24 August 2018 regarding the promotion of Mae Hong Son into the leading province in orchid production. The meeting will be held at Imperial Mae Hong Son hotel.
