Monday, August 20, Phoenix Gold – Stableford
Phoenix on an over cast day and thinking we might get lucky we teed off on time and got around to the 8th green, which is when we saw the rain coming in the distance. So it was off to the drinks stop for about 40 minutes and then we were out again and had no more interruptions.
We started out as 5 groups but that turned into 4 as not having carts on the course stopped some from playing.
There was a count-back for the minor podium places between Greg Ritchie, Bill Marsden and Graham Beaumont, all on 34 points, with Greg taking fourth, Bill third and Graham second. We had a runaway winner with the lovely Sasicha scoring 40 points to take the top spot.
There were two ‘2’s recorded. coming from George Way and Gerard Lambert.
Wednesday, August 22, Green Valley – Stableford
The weather forecast gave a 30% chance of rain today but fortunately the expects were 30% wrong, however the humidity seemed to stop the ball going quite as far as usual. The greens did not help your score today for they had been scarified, which meant that putting against or across the lines was slow and the ball had to be hit – but greens maintenance is essential so get used to it.
Despite the supposed problems, the scores were very good. Miss Am lost her way a little with only 2 points over 3 holes and slipped to fourth with 35 points, one behind Miss Pin who stepped up a gear on the back-nine with 20 points. Miss Kran in second also fell away in the last few holes, having only 3 points in the closing 4, which might have been the difference to Miss Phew who won the day with 40 points helped by 8 points on two birdie holes.
In the men’s flight Sandy Chapo had 36 points for fourth place, one adrift of Auk Engelkes who played well particularly after he had caught a snake on the way to the 11th hole, only to see the caddies run as quickly as possible in the opposite direction. Colin Goon played well for 12 holes, being under par for the first 6 holes but three 1-pointers did not help his cause as he finished second to his playing partner, Selwyn Wegner, who did not drop a shot on the holes 10 to 14 for a final score of 40 points.
We had four ‘2’s today, all coming from the ladies in the shape of Miss Yao, Miss Jang and two to Miss Phew.
Friday, August 24, Burapha – Stableford
Now, those with preconceived ideas about how tough Burapha A and B loops are from the white markers, they will be surprised by the work being done on the greens which are being reduced in size by about 2 feet all around the outside, which makes the 1st hole on the B side a very tough shot, especially as you are normally hitting a long iron or even a wood for your approach.
Apart from that the course was in fantastic condition with no room to criticize any part in any way shape or form. With only a small field today we were away a little early and as the course was relatively empty we enjoyed a very leisurely round of golf.
The scoring was not bad with 36 points being good enough for second and third, with Brian Orr taking the bronze and Sandy Chapo the silver. It was a family affair today as Sandy’s lovely wife Sasicha took the top spot with 37 points.
There was only one ‘2’, coming from George Way.
