HRH Princess Chulabhorn commemorated Thailand’s top achievements in chemistry in 2012 when she handed out awards and opened the Pure and Applied Chemistry International Conference.
Her Highness, who holds a doctorate in chemistry from Kasetsart University and was the first Asian honorary member of Britain’s Royal Society of Chemistry, opened the PACCON show at the Tide Resort in Bangsaen Jan. 23. Chonburi Gov. Khomsan Ekachai attended along with top national police, military and academic leaders.

The annual conference, organized by Burapha University, provides a stage for chemists to present their work on an international level and meet with scientists from around the world.
Suphawan Tantayanont, president of the Chemistry Society of Thailand, introduced the winners of the group’s 2012 awards, who received plaques from Her Highness.
CST Distinguished Young Chemist Award 2012 ( Physical Chemistry): Banjong Boonchom, an associate chemistry professor at King Mongkul’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, won the Distinguished Young Chemist award for 2012. Bhinyo Panijpan, an associate professor at Mahidol University, won the Distinguished Contribution to Chemical Education award.
Jitlada Vichapong of Mahasarakham University was awarded the Merck-Chemical Society joint award for distinguished dissertation. Kajornsak Faungnawakij of the National Nanotechnology Center won the Wiley-Chemical Society joint award for contributions to “green chemistry.”
