BANGKOK, 25 February 2013  Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung and Royal Thai Police Commissioner-General Adul Saengsingkaew announced the arrests of major drug traffickers in the northern region and the confiscation of more than 5 million pills of methamphetamine.

15 people were arrested in 4 cases, and officials were able to seize 136 kilograms of “Ice” and 5.2 million pills of methamphetamine. Most of the arrested were either Thais of Chinese descent or hill tribes people.

The arrests were the result of intense intelligence work by police, who became aware of an imminent drugs carriage from the northern region into Bangkok. Police officials were deployed to track down the transporters, and they successfully seized the items in Chiang Rai province and in Krathumban district of Samutsakhon.

Pol. Capt. Chalerm has told investigators to determine whether the seized drugs were sourced from the same network. He believed the drugs may have originated from two major drug rings which officials have been closely monitoring.
