KANCHANABURI, March 5 – A feast for elephants in Sai Yok district here was hosted Tuesday by varied local authorities as part of their animal conservation activities.
Sai Yok district chief Somchart Teerasuwannajak together with Lumsum subdistrict administrative organization chief Chuang Naktongkum, and Sai Yok Elephant Park owner Chaipong Saendee who also chairs the Thai Elephant Association organised the party at an elephant park with bananas, watermelon, pineapple, and sugar cane served for the partying pachyderms.
Local residents joined the feast by bringing food and other fruits for the jumbos, creating a festive atmosphere and lots of fun for Thais and farang (foreign) tourists alike.
The event aimed at raising awareness of elephant conservation in the country and to fight against the ivory trade, as elephants are honoured as Thailand’s national animal.
The government announced that March 13 every year will henceforth be Thailand’s elephant day.
