Day 4 of the Lewiinski’s Open Championship and the players went out in reverse order of the field, with the contenders going off last. It was Clint and Eddy ‘the Eagle’ in the last group with the Donkey and Irishman Gerry Roche just in front.

‘[The Eagle’ started off with a bogie on the first, and then a double followed by a bogie but held it steady with a par on the fourth. Clinton started with a steady par on the first, then a blood curling yell was heard from the second tee box as Clint sent his tee shot onto the wrong fairway, which led to a lost ball resulting in a nine on the hole!
Clint recovered well to card pars on the next two holes. Eddy took a bogie then a birdie and a par to really put a cat among the pigeons, finishing the front nine with a solid par and bogie on the ninth. Clint had a double on the eighth and a par on the ninth.
On the back nine Eddy started birdie-double to Clint’s bogie-treble so for the first time in the Open Eddy was in the lead. Clint recovered well to card four pars and a bogie to Eddy’s treble, two bogies and a par, but remember he was a 16 handicapper and was supposed to do this.
Eddy did extremely well to par the seventeenth, as Clint made a double. So it is down to the last hole which left Clint with a five foot nerve racking put to force a playoff – Clint made the putt and won the 19th hole.
So it was Clinton Hazlett’s name that appeared on the perpetual trophy. Commiserations go out to Eddy who helped make this a game to remember.
And what about the Plate? This also had its fair share of drama as it went to a three-way count back that saw Mark ‘mussels’ Bonner lift the top prize, with Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan the first runner up as Freddy Starbeck was in third.

Irishman Peter ‘Don O’Corleone’ Henshaw has started to show good form with a fantastic man of the match and first place in B Flight 40 points. Peter was six clear of Terry Fitzgerald.

Tom Killoran out-pointed both Aussie Lou Zigzag and Sean Murphy as he rounded out the flight.
The laurels in the senior circuit went to Liam Hayes with a sparkling 37 points. Second and third places went the same way as their B Flight mates, as Dominic Downey took silver and the bronze went to Trevor Oliver. Co. Offaly gang leader Kevin ‘you know who’ was left speechless as he had nowhere to stand.

Wednesday’s venue was the intriguing construct of Desmond Muirhead. Tony Glidden showed fine mettle as he topped the day and A Flight with a flawless 44 points. Mr. nice guy Thierry Petrement with a fine 39 points must have thought he had done enough to have won, and most other days he would have, he just picked the wrong day. Aussie ace Bob Watson filled the flight a further shot back.
B Flight was log jammed as three players had 38 point returns: Tore Eliassen, Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan and Gerry Roche. When the count back was complete Tore was laughing all the way to the pay window, Pork chop was smiling and Gerry was weeping.
Stuart Brown topped C Flight with an excellent 37 points, three clear of a pair of ‘Micks’ – Ivan Plunkett, who snatched the silver, whilst Peter Don O’Corleone Henshaw was just happy to see any part of the podium with his 33 points.
Tony Glidden, Paul Shaw, Dave Palmer, Gavin Perfect, Gerry Roche and Gary Ralph shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, March 8, Greenwood C&B – Stableford

The day belonged to Matt Doyle – a sergeant in the Co. Offaly gang – and Mikko ‘Mutant’, both players the only ones to better par on the day. Following Matt in A Flight was pay window regular Aussie ace Bob Watson with an even par round, no mean feat when you have a measly 3 handicap. Third place went to the second count back winner on the day, Irishman Dominic Downey, Dominic’s good fortune was to the dismay of Steve Gibson.
B Flight was like a casting directors delight with the gold leaving in the hands of Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake (but only just as the boot was nearly on the other foot). Barry forgot to add his name to the card – it was signed but took a bit of working out. The silver left with Michael Goggin and the bronze gripped tight by Jimmy AK-47 Bell.
The junior flight was led by a guy who seems to cash every week, Mikko ‘Mutant’ Mutanen. Tom Gory, fully committed to continuing his downward handicap trend, was second and third went to the ever improving Irishman Fergus O’Brien.
Barry Copestake, Colin Smith, D Palmer, Michael Goggin, Colin Davis and Bob Watson shared the 2’s pot.
