Pattavia came up on the rotation this Tuesday and twenty nervous golfers made the trip, know “those greens” were waiting. On arrival, the course condition was found to be quite good with fairways well kept. Pattavia is famous for its tricky 3-putt greens, and the good or lucky keep their ball below the hole, and that can add up.

There was a rain delay of about an hour but the course drains well, and naturally those sloped greens shed water quickly. With rain and tough putting, anyone with a poor round had excuses, but there were enough good scores to mute those who tried. Because of a very uneven mix of handicaps, we opted for three flights of two winners each to group similar rated golfers together better. It worked out splendidly.

As most are aware Derek Brook who started as organizer of tropical golf 16 years ago and the ever lovable Dick Warberg, who has been co organizing golf at Tropical since 2008, both have ongoing health issues that unfortunately don’t allow them to continue organizing golf at Tropical. The sudden impact on Dick’s health is now in good hands and we hope to see him back on the fairways in the future.

Karen Brown (21pts) and Graham Buckingham (20pts) had the best half rounds by non-winners.

Friday, Nov. 23, Bangpakong Riverside – Stableford

Bangpakong is almost always in top condition, although today, it was a little wet, so riding carts on the fairways was not allowed and ‘lift clean and place’ was employed. The course didn’t look crowded but a dreaded five-ball group teed off just prior to the Tropical golfers. We would not be rushed today and finished with a six hour round, and the shadows were starting to get a little long when the last group wrapped up play.

We did eventually get back to BJ’s for the presentation. Out of 13 players we had five on the podium. Topping the field with an excellent 41 points was Frank Xin, playing from his course handicap of 27. Second went to Bob Britton (13) with 38 points, Dave Cooper (25) claimed third with 37 in a countback over Deryl Neufeld (16), and Don Carmody (29) placed fifth with 35 points.

The consolation best front nine for non-winners went to Brian Parish’s 18, while, special guest presenter, Rob Brown had the best back nine score with 19 points.
