BANGKOK, 27 March 2011 (NNT)– Director General of the Department of Intellectual Property, Patchima Tanasanti disclosed the result of a survey made by the Motion Pictures Association (MPA) of the United States, on copyright infringement of audio-visual works, which indicated that Thailand was the top country of cam-cording felony in cinemas. In 2010, a total of 37 international films have been secretly recorded, an increase of 48 percent from 2009 at 25.
Ms Patchima said the Ministry of Commerce had proposed an amendment to the copyright law to cover cam-cording in cinemas which had been apporoved by the Cabinet and was now scrutinized by the State Council.
Meanwhile, Duputy Commerce Minister, Alongkorn Ponlaboot will hold a meeting with representatives of filmmakers, copyrights owners and related agencies to discuss the suppression of intellectual property rights violation since Thailand is currently in the Priority Watch List with not enough progress made in preventing various kinds of copyrights and patent violations.
Ms Patchima added that, another problem was that there were some groups falsely representing international leading intellectual property owners and confiscating the illegal products, causing troubles to people.
In case anyone have encountered such a problem, they can contact local police stations to check if they are being arrested by the officer or authorized representatives of copyrights owner.
Furthermore the Department will issue another announcement to control the authorized representatives by specifying an identity card for them to be able to take action in order to avoid such a problem.
