Public Health Ministry sent medical assistance to help Mae Surin Fire survivors

MAE HONG SON, 24 March 2013 The Public Health Ministry has dispatched officials and medical teams to help refugees, who survived the fire accident at a camp in Mae Hong Son. 

Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong said on Sunday that the ministry has already sent assistance to survivors of the Baan Mae Surin refugee camp fire, Mae Hong Son Province, who are have been transferred to a temporary shelter over the weekend.

According to Mr. Pradit, health officials will focus on the disease control, particularly the prevention of malaria.

He added that the hygiene control is also another area of focus, which will be implemented on foods, drinking water, toilets and even garbage disposal.

The Public Health Minister also stated that psychiatrists and related officials as well as interpreters from within Mae Hong Son, have been sent in to work with representatives from various international organizations to check on and rehabilitate all survivors.

Regarding the treatment of physical injuries, medical teams have also been tending those in need around the clock.

In addition, Mr. Pradit said a mobile medical unit has been assigned to stay at the temporary shelter for 7 days in order to offer tetanus injections to the survivors, while injured refugees have been receiving medical attention at hospitals in Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai.
