Bangkok – The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) says it will end all meetings one week prior to the national poll.

NLA President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai has confirmed that the lawmakers will finish all legislative work including weekly assemblies one week before people cast their votes in the election of members of parliament, scheduled for March 24, even though the 2017 Constitution clearly stipulates that the NLA can perform its duties until the lower house of an elected government holds its first assembly.

He added that the NLA is currently reviewing the qualifications of candidates for the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRC) and top positions at other independent organizations.

The appointment of NHRC members will need the new parliament’s consent.

Asked if the endorsement of election results should be made within 150 days of the enforcement of the Election of MPs Act, Pornpetch advised that the electoral body is seeking the Constitutional Court’s interpretation of the 150-day time frame.
