The Pattaya Press Association hosted a lecture on Buddhist dharma to raise funds for the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child-Abuse Center.

Association President Amporn Saengkaew welcomed Sompong Talputto of Srongthong Phra Aaram Luang Temple in Bangkok to the conference center at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya March 25. Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh and Banglamung Cable TV executive Detchthana Bunyapraphachot were among the many who attended.

Sompong discussed how individuals and the city can impress tourists, saying everyone from vendors to hotels to politicians need to learn to communicate better. Dharma and proverbs are reminders that Buddhist minds should come together and unite as one, which will provide the solution for all, he said.

Although tourists speak many languages, Sompong continued, it is possible to communicate and understand. That is particularly important with Thailand soon entering the ASEAN Economic Community, he said.

Sompong is a popular traveling speaker who was ordained as a monk in 1998. He has authored a number of books on dharma and is the winner of the Wat Sao Saemajak award from HRH Princess Sirindhorn.

The 14,400 baht raised at the lecture goes to the anti-human trafficking shelter. Another lecture is scheduled for April 6.
