BANGKOK, April 5 – Thailand has projected to increase its rubber yield by 30 per cent in the next seven years in an attempt to boost the country’s competitive edge, a senior official said today.
Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Yuthapong Charassathien said a strategic framework for development of expanded rubber production is being mapped out.
Key elements include modern production technology, marketing system and major obstacles in the global rubber market.
He said Thailand aims to increase rubber productivity from 1,500 kg/rai (0.4 acre) to 2,000 kg/rai by 2020, to be on par with Malaysia’s production capability.
Farmers will have to change to new seedlings but their income will eventually be higher, he said.
