Bangkok – The private sector has donated as many as 15,000 pollution masks to traffic police to protect their health while on duty.

Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, Pol. Maj. Gen. Jirasan Kaewsaengeak, chaired the ceremony to receive the masks from the Viriyah Insurance Company, worth 550,000 baht, to be used by traffic police operating in areas with poor air quality.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Jirasan said officers are constantly faced with dust and exhaust fumes and must, therefore rely on pollution masks. However, due to insufficient masks, officers have frequently had to reuse their masks, which diminishes their effectiveness.

Up to 70% of police officers have reportedly suffered from respiratory diseases when they fail to wear a pollution mask while carrying out their duties.
