Bangkok – Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has asked citizens to use natural resources, especially water, more efficiently ahead of the upcoming drought season.

Gen Prayut said Thailand must do better to use its resources properly and efficiently for long-term development and sustainability. For the past four years, he said his administration has rolled out numerous water projects to ensure sufficient supply for household consumption and agriculture. With that said, there remain a number of large-scale projects waiting to be launched.

Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paochinda said the amount of water available this year will be less than last year, and ordered local agencies to brace for possible water scarcity both inside and outside irrigated zones. Water trucks have been prepared in the event of an emergency. Local producers are advised to grow crops and vegetables that can tolerate drier conditions and higher temperatures.
