BANGKOK, 16 April 2013  – The Department of Industrial Promotion plans to push Bangkok’s fashion wholesale markets toward becoming the ASEAN region’s fashion wholesale center.

Wirit Wisetsin, director of the New Entrepreneurs Creation division, said the department will start to improve the capacity of the businesses at the 4 markets next year. The markets include Pratunam, Chatuchak, Sampheng and Bobae. SME businesses will be the focus of this drive. Projects to support the drive include the project for development of specific industries for ASEAN economic integration and the project for market negotiation and survey.

Phrakhorachai Siphawathikun, chairman of Bobae Market’s export service center, viewed that Thailand already is a selling center for fashion items. If the 4 markets are synergized, exportation of fashion goods is expected to increase to no less than 24 billion baht per year.

The top export destination for Thailand’s fashion items is the Philippines. Malaysia comes in at second.
