Bangkok – The Election Commission dismissed on Tuesday news reports that the polling agency would issue orange, yellow and red cards to electoral contestants in 117 constituencies.
The EC issued a statement to dismiss such news reports as groundless and announce that 264 complaints have been filed and are currently being investigated with personal and material witnesses being collected by the polling agency.
The orange, yellow and red cards could practically lead to by-elections, rescinding of electoral candidacy and suffrage if found guilty as charged by the Supreme Court in accordance with Article 138 of the organic law on the election of MPs.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha called on members of the public to understand the procedures at the EC as well as official regulations pertaining to the election and to leave it all to judgment of the court.
He called on the people to never cause social unrest if they joined in the ongoing movement for the impeachment of the commissioners.
Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said that a people’s petition to be submitted to the National Anti-Corruption Commission for the impeachment of the commissioners could be carried out but cautioned that the EC is legally obliged to make announcement of the official results of the election.
He said the current polling agency is a new one under new electoral rules which might cause confusion to the public and suggested the EC clarify all questions.
