BANGKOK, 19 April 2013 One hundred and thirty nine Siamese rosewood logs have been confiscated in Nakhon Phanom Province.

According to the Phulangka National Park, the seizure of the 139 logs of Siamese rosewood came in light of an intelligence report that there would be a smuggling of the protected wood. Upon inspection of the area along the Mekong River, officials spotted several people smuggling the wood out of the country. However, all the suspects managed to flee the scene.

Each of the logs measures between 1-3 meters long and 20-40 centimeters in diameter. The value of the seized logs was estimated at 4 million baht.

Siamese rosewood used to sell for around 1,000-1,500 baht per kilogram, but the price has currently doubled, thanks to the clampdown of the Thai officials. Over 50 million baht worth of Siamese rosewood was seized in Nakhon Phanom in March alone, the official said.
