Bangkok – The government is concerned about water availability in the northeastern region, as the reservoirs are less than half full, urging responsible agencies to implement measures to ensure sufficient supplies.
Deputy Prime Minister Gen Chatchai Sarikulya revealed the overall water levels at reservoirs are generally acceptable. However, there are currently more than 20 reservoirs holding less than 50% of their capacity due to excessive use of water for farming, both within and beyond irrigation service areas. This has necessitated a review of water management plans to prevent shortages to the point which might affect environmental conservation. He said farmers are asked to cooperate by refraining from farming crops which consume a lot of water, while the government will help ensure all crops, which have already been planted, will not be damaged.
Seven of the half empty reservoirs are in the northeastern region. Officials will be inspecting water availability in those areas after the Songkran holidays, and will be implementing the same measures as in 2015 to ensure sufficient water is available for consumption.
The general public are asked to use water sparingly to prevent the adverse effects on the farming sector and the amount of water available for consumption. Authorities will be transporting clean water to supply areas experiencing water shortages to help affected villagers.
