BANGKOK, April 30 – The newly-appointed minister of tourism and sports has proposed  establishing a tourism court to speedily and exclusively cope with legal cases concerning foreign tourists.

Somsak Phurisisak said the Judiciary Office agreed in principle with the idea but indicated that the process takes time since it involves promulgating new legislation and amendment of some related laws.

In the initial stage, department on tourism cases may be set up in the judicial system to accelerate disputes or crimes concerning foreign tourists, he said.

Mr Somsak said additional budget for the purpose must be allocated by the Budget Bureau and the ministry itself.

At least 22 million foreign tourists visit Thailand each year and a tourism court will help speed up legal cases, he said.

Mr Somsak said he will discuss the issue with National Police Chief Adul Saengsingkaew tomorrow.
