BANGKOK, 10 May 2013 The Metropolitan Police Bureau is preparing measures for handling traffic congestion once schools reopen later this month.

Deputy Metropolitan Police Chief Pol Maj Gen Uthaiwan Kaew Sa-ard said additional officers are being recruited to facilitate commuters during the beginning of the new academic year. Police will pay extra attention to managing the traffic flow in front of schools from May 14-17.

Measures to ease congestion include traffic management plans jointly set up by schools and nearby police stations, increased coordination between police stations located near schools and removal of road obstacles around the school premises.

Pol Maj Gen Uthaiwan said the most traffic-congested spots are around major schools, such as Bangkok Christian College School and St Joseph Convent School, in the inner parts of the capital.

Police have also received confirmation from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration that repair works on the Thai-Belgian Bridge will be completed before May 14 in a bid to clear up traffic.
