Bangkok – Deputy Minister of Education Kalaya Sophonpanich says her ministry is considering replacing traditional textbooks students have to carry to school with e-books.

The move comes on the back of reports about a student in Khon Kaen who allegedly has spinal deformities as a result of carrying a heavy bag to school every day.

The Deputy Minister said the initiative will have to be discussed with all related agencies, while admitting that the causes of spinal deformities suffered by the Khon Kaen student remain unproven at this stage.

Sophonpanich also admitted that the use of e-books comes with its own concerns, as sitting in front of a screen for 7-10 hours a day may affect students’ eyesight and even their necks from looking down at the screen for extended periods.
