BANGKOK, 16 May 2013 – 6 Thai female researchers secured awards from the International Women’s Invention Exposition 2013, with one having received a special award from the Korea Intellectual Property Office.
Dr. Duangphon Amonloetphisan, a researcher from Maejo University in Chiang Mai, showcased a facial mask made from Spirogyra sea weed at the event in South Korea.
According to Dr. Duangphon, Spirogyra is readily found in freshwater bodies in the north and northeast of Thailand, and locals have long been using it for food as it is rich in nutrients. A large number of health foods and cosmetics are being derived from Spirogyra.
Dr. Duangphon told reporters the award-winning, patented gel mask is ready for commercial production. According to her, extracts from Spirogyra has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. When applied to the skin, the gel mask helps provides moisture and relieves wrinkles. Its property of acting against the tyrosinase enzyme, an oxidase, provides a more pronounced counter to freckles and blotches.
