Bangkok – The Justice Minister, Somsak Thepsuthin, is to attend a meeting in Vietnam to strengthen cooperation on transnational issues, including the disruption of drug smuggling.

The meeting will take place in Vietnam on September 9 and 10 and will be attended by delegates from the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) member states, including Thailand, Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Officials from the Philippines as well as representatives of the Australian Federal Police, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNDOC) will also join this international meeting. They will discuss ways to bolster joint efforts against transnational drug trafficking.

Somsak said Thai authorities have stepped up measures to prevent transnational drug traffickers from using Thailand as a transit route. As a result, many traffickers have turned to Vietnam. Thailand will provide cooperation and assistance to help address transnational drug-related crimes at the meeting.
