BANGKOK, 27 May 2013  The prime minister has assured the public that the explosion in Bangkok on Sunday night has had nothing to do with insurgent violence in the southern border region.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, said on Monday, that the bomb explosion at the entrance of Ramkhamhaeng University Soi 43/1, which injured seven people, was not related to years-long insurgency in the Deep South, as many have speculated.

The PM’s assurance is in line with comments from National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Adul Saengsingkaew, who revealed that evidence collected from the crime scene showed the explosives are not similar to materials used in the restive far South.

Pol. Gen. Adul stated that as the Sunday night explosion could not cause as much damage as those employed by insurgents, the perpetrators did not likely intend to kill.

But while investigators have preliminarily established the motives behind the explosion on either business conflict or attempts to stir up fear, they are yet to rule out Deep South insurgency.

The National Police Chief has also instructed the Metropolitan Police Bureau to launch and wrap up a thorough investigation at the crime scene and surrounding areas within 7 days.
