Monday, Sept. 9, Greenwood – Stableford
1st Derek Phillips (15) 37pts
2nd Jim Ferris (23) 36pts
3rd Maurice Roberts (13) 35pts
4th Darren Beavers (17) 33pts
After a mixed bag of results recently Derek made the comment that “ we can still comeback”, and today he did just that with a top score of 37 points to once again wear the Green Jacket.
Reality set in for the 26 players when it was decided to go from the longer white tees today, at 6,600 yards. No problem with the condition of the course however, excellent as always, although the greens were a little slower than usual.
Coming in second to Derek was Jim Ferris, who has played very sparingly recently, and played to handicap for his 36 points.
Maurice Roberts was again in the mix by taking third spot with 35 points and Darren Beavers had to beat two others on countback for fourth spot with 33.
Mike Tottenham was one of those in the countback but picked up the prize for best back nine, while the best front nine went to Tom Herrington who is now enroute to the USA for a visit.
Near pins went to Andrew Purdie, Adam Barton, Paul Chesney, Tip Briney.
Wednesday, Sept. 11, Burapha – Stableford
1st Aki Yamamoto (19) 39pts
2nd Paul Smith (3) 37pts
3rd Darren Beavers (17) 36pts
4th Colin Service (17) 35pts
On Wednesday the society travelled to nearby Burapha to play a stableford competition in one flight, on the A and B nines. The course was in good condition generally but the club is deep in preparations for a big national event there mid October. The majority of the white tee boxes were closed, leaving the white tees next to the blue ones, making the course much longer than normal, and in one case the white tees were behind the blues!
Twenty-two golfers teed off on time and a tight contest ensued. In fourth place was Colin Service with 35 points, just one behind Darren Beavers on 36. Second place went to three-handicapper Paul Smith and he recorded gross 74 for 37 points. The winner, on his debut with the group, and looking resplendent in the Green Jacket, was Japanese golfer Aki Yamamoto with 39 points.
The A flight near pins went to Derek Phillips (A6 and B8) whilst the B flight near pins went to Colin Service (A3) and Bryan Barrell (B3).
Consolation awards went to Maurice Roberts for his best front nine of 16 points and Phil Davies took the back nine award with 19 points.
Friday, Sept, 13, Pattana A & B – Stableford
1st Kevin LaBar (13) 41pts
2nd Maurice Roberts (13) 39pts
3rd Stuart Thompson (19) 38pts
4th Paul Smith (3) 37pts
One player in our first group suggested that there should be some scores in the forties today due to the condition of the course. We had to wait until the last group came in, however, before we saw a 41point card handed in by the golf journeyman Kevin LaBar. Kevin gets around a few groups in Pattaya and plays a lot of golf and today made Friday the 13th his lucky Green Jacket day.
Maurice Roberts is still holding onto some good form and ran into second place with a well played 39 points. Then Stu Thompson, having one of his quite regular good days, took third spot with 38. Paul Smith rounded out the podium scoring 37 points to nudge out Chris Barker on countback.
Near pins were claimed by Paul Smith, Wayne Peppernell, and Stuart Thompson (x 2).
Ritchie McIntosh is always at the ready for some sort of headwear and this time it was the “silly hat” for lowest nine hole score.
