BANGKOK – The MRT Blue Line extensions, from Hua Lamphong to Bang Khae and from Tao Poon to Tha Phra, have officially opened to improve the travel convenience of commuters and ease traffic woes in Bangkok.

Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha presided over the opening ceremony of the MRT Blue Line extensions. The government had expedited efforts to complete the project so that the full service could be launched for the benefit of the public.

The Prime Minister said the extensions will help reduce traffic congestion on roads while improving the people’s quality of life in Bangkok. He said these efforts will also have to be implemented in other provinces, and relevant agencies are to create an understanding with the public about the impact of the construction on traffic and other factors.

The MRT Blue Line extensions, from Hua Lamphong to Bang Khae and from Tao Poon to Tha Phra, are part of the Rail Mass Transit Master Plan in Bangkok and its vicinity. The 27-kilometer project will help ease traffic woes and improve travel convenience for people commuting via the Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line to Thon Buri.

The Prime Minister led a group of officials to travel by train on the new rail extension from Tha Phra station to Wat Mangkon station. The Prime Minister greeted people and vendors in the Yaowarat area before making merit at Mangkon Kamalawat temple, known in Chinese as Wat Leng Nui Yee.
