Bangkok – The Cabinet this week extended the welfare campaign for low income earners until September 2020, which is expected to cost 1.8 billion baht offering utility subsidies and a 5% VAT rebate.
Government Spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat announced the approval of the extension to the government’s welfare campaign for low-income earners by one year.
Eligible persons in this program will receive a monthly subsidy of 230 baht per household for electricity bills, and 100 baht for water bills until 30 September 2020.
A VAT rebate program will be offered from 1 November 2019 to 30 September 2019 for purchases made with a welfare card. From 7% VAT normally collected, the government will rebate 5% every 15th of the month to cardholders’ e-wallets, from which they can make cash withdrawals. 1% will be sent to cardholders’ National Savings Fund accounts or other savings accounts. Under this scheme, welfare cardholders will only pay 1% VAT for each eligible purchase.
The campaign will cover 14.6 million people, and will cost 1.839 billion baht, out of which 1.74 billion will be for the electricity bill subsidy, 30 billion for the water bill subsidy and 69 billion for the VAT rebate.
